Dear Carolyn,
Happy Birthday! You are the best, one of a kind. Allow me to answer a few of the questions Big Mike posted:
Q: What are the top 3 qualities I love about Carolyn?
A:
1. Her energy
2. Her loyalty
3. Her uncanny sense for people
Carolyn has an AMAZING sense for people. Combine that with her smarts, her energy and her sense of humor, and you have a PHENOM on your hands. Add her warmth and loyalty, and you have a GREAT FRIEND who is so much fun to be around.
Q:What is a little known fact about Carolyn that you can share?
A:She was a pretty bad dancer in high school. (Actually that's not true.)
Q: The song that reminds me of Carolyn is ______:
A: Super Freak, by Rick James
Q:I can always count on Carolyn to ______:
A: Tell the truth. And bring a smile.
Q:When I first met Carolyn I thought she was_____:
A: Really cute and so much fun (that was the perspective of this ninth grade boy).
Q:The nicest thing Carolyn ever did for me was _____:
A:It's not one thing she did, but a quality that Carolyn has, that I'm sure others can attest to-- with Carolyn, you get the feeling that she is a huge fan of yours. Well Carolyn, the feeling's mutual -- I am a HUGE FAN of yours, as are so many others!
Happy Birthday!

This is Quite Unbelievable
And to all of you who have sent blogs, I can only tell you that as I sit here reading them, I have tears running down my cheeks.

The Snitch
Back when 5 years age difference was a big deal, Carolyn was a cool senior and I was an adorable eighth grader.
At the time I fancied myself somewhat of a talented detective; I was constantly collecting clues, taking note of unusual activities and memorizing suspicious license plates. That year, it was reported that a creepy man had come to the school and "flashed" a couple girls. In the announcements that were sent home and were posted around school, a few vague details were given to describe this man and his getaway bike. As you can imagine, with my sleuthing skills and those of my associate Mercedes McAndrew, we took catching the criminal very seriously. We just wanted to contribute - maybe we could assist in doing descriptions for one of those criminal sketches. Who knew?
So at lunchtime one day, we went out by the playgrounds and sat on the other side of some bushes so we weren't visible from school. As you can imagine, middle school girls were not allowed outside at this time. We were forced to go a bit outside of the law. In the end, we figured, we'll be heroes and they'll forget all about this dumb rule.
As we're nestled on in our look-out spot who comes back from lunch and sees us sitting outside - this Carolyn you all speak of so kindly. She probably noticed that there were no other kids outside on the whole campus and so she asked, "What are you girls doing out here?" We confided in her, "We're looking for the flasher." "I think you two better get back inside," she said. So we did.
I may not have remembered any of this story if it had not been for where I landed the next school morning - the principal's office! I don't think Mercedes was the leak. You catch my drift here?
Big love to you Carolyn. Many hugs and kisses on your birthday.
Esther
We feel so blessed to have her influence so many friends and family
I decided not to read the other blogs so that I wouldn’t be influenced by others.
I’m sure they are filled with comments about fun people have had with Carolyn, about being able to talk to her when you have a problem, about her desire to extend herself to all who need her help, and on and on.
I want to talk as a father about her ability to handle any challenge that arises. After all, she delivered one of our seventeen beautiful grandchildren. Who else can say they helped deliver a niece? No one but Carolyn.
Who else can have teenage boys think that Latin is fun? No one but Carolyn.
Carolyn’s enthusiasm and love of all around her is so infectious that I stand in awe that we brought up someone with all of this love for life.
We feel so blessed to have her influence so many friends and family.
Love you,
Dad

Carolyn, The Buonanno Family Glue Guy
In every successful team there is the glue guy, the person who brings it all together; the unsung hero. This is the person who does the little things right. The glue guy is loved by the fans and adored by teammates because of their unselfishness and quiet heroics. On this year 40th birthday I nominate Carolyn as the Buonanno family glue guy. You make it click. You do a thousand little things that make our lives better, whether it’s a timely e-mail, an open invitation to vent (when you have hundreds of things going on in your own life) or a smart ass remark in a tense moment, you make it happen. Glue guys make the world go ‘round. But just because you’re turning 40 doesn’t mean you can slow down because who knows what would happen if you stopped. With that I hope you celebrate and supercharge yourself for the next 40 years of glue guy stardom!
Love,

What are the top 3 qualities I love about Carolyn?
Sense of humor, fun-loving spirit, devotion to her family (especially The Big Guy).
What is a little known fact about Carolyn that you can share?
I forget exactly where the tattoo is but Mike should know.
The song that reminds me of Carolyn is anything from The Crash Test Dummies. After our 10th class reunion in 1994 (not Carolyn's of course, she is way too young), we all went to Block Island for a getaway. Carolyn and Mike played "God Shuffled His Feet" virtually non-stop and whenever I hear a song from that album (not a very common occurence) I am transported back to the days of Block Island and the OJ Simpson car chase (we were glued to the TV set).
What is the one thing Carolyn should do during her 40th year: Buy her husband a very nice 47th birthday gift. He's getting up there, and he deserves it.
How would you answer the following:
I can always count on Carolyn to tell a good story.
When I first met Carolyn I thought she was way out of reach for someone like Mike.
The nicest thing Carolyn ever did for me was to be extraordinarily charitable in the line calls during a doubles match last year. I'm an extremely pathetic tennis "player," and while Joan and Mike were laughing Carolyn was giving me [false] hope that I could actually hit the ball inside the lines.
Who will be in the White House 1/20/09 (I couldn't resist putting this in!)? President Obama and Vice President Dodd.
Hot For Teacher
When I started blogging about Carolyn last week I meant to keep adding to it since I couldn't think of everything all at once. I was working on "Song that Reminds me of Carolyn" and I realized what it was as I was walking down the hallway of Wellesley High School. The song is
" Hot For Teacher" by Van Halen. The obvious reasons are clear even as she enters her 40th year. beyond the obvious I think everyone is "Hot For Carolyn" in the school environment because her enthusiasm and love of kids makes her a magnet. Students seek her out for advice and teachers work to be as good as her. As a teacher for 9 years now myself I can honestly credit Carolyn for showing me the way in this field. Before my very first day of teaching in NYC I called Carolyn like a week before the 1st day panicking "What do I teach on the actual first day?!!!". Carolyn gave me an easy "break the ice activity" that SAVED me. We also both taught Latin for several years and there were several times I needed to quickly call her to help with a translation or just to figure out how SHE faked it so well!!! Love, Marg

Happy 40th!
CB- Happy 40th ! You are always a blast to be around and you light up a room with your energy, laugh, smile and sense of humor. Never afraid to speak the truth and always up for some trash talkin'. It has been great moving through life's journeys and milestones with you- welcome to the 40+ club! Some recent memories include the great dinner at your house for Mike's birthday where my outdoorsman skills almost led to a full-on smokeout of the entire house - yes that flu is closed. Also, the dominant tennis performance at Agawam for Paul Mahoney's birthday round robin- I think we crushed all teams - and if my memeory is self serving who is going to dispute it here on your birthday blog anyway?! Going way back, there were some great cookie parties, a prom and maybe a couple parties here and there- always fun! Best wishes to you for a great 40th and to you, Mike and your whole family for a great year and many more to come!

10, 20 , 30, 40!
I have seen you through birthdays in all of these decades! It is crazy! You are to me... So many things I will try to capture here while I of course need a shower and should pay attention to my kids! Back to you.First – I have always dug your gorgeous hair...
Lets keep some superficial stuff here! Your smile fills a room, your energy spills out the windows of that room. You are loved and admired and always have been. That is just a fact you must live with! And... You truly deserve all that love as you are an amazing woman. 10+...
At the dunes club, I would get dropped off feeling rather shy and nervous - you had tennis skills that did not stop. You showed me what a nice girl you were then, and now. Always kind. You have always been FAIR and FUN. You showed me how competition was so much fun, that has never stopped. You did help light a fire in my otherwise lazy ways! You have always shown me what it was to work hard, play hard, to want something and go for it (hi mike! Hee hee). You showed your heart was made of gold. 20’s...well, this was an ummm... A funny time! The good, the bad and the ugly. We made it out and have some excellent stories. Your dancing skills I believe are a highlight. A little too much Donna here... Nobody wore sparkly clothes and made them look like a million bucks like you did! 30’s... Sharing motherhood moments, amazing! Aren’t we still 20? You and mike welcomed me into your home while I was in providence. Crowning me the chicken lady and giving me a place in your children’s hearts. Filled my life with joy... And perhaps created the vision of the family and home I now have in my life... Now we have the phone call or email to help me through some more challenging moments post-childbirth or a fast-paced update on all the rest. I have such admiration for the beautiful children you have created with mike... They are your greatest achievement... And they are simply incredible! 40+... You deserve only the best for the next 40 years! As we cram our conversations in a quick walk on the beach or the occasional phone call. I look forward to sharing it all with you... You are a fantastic friend... And I hope you will always kill it on the dance floor and I get to cheer you on- maybe someday I will be able to get down like that!
Happy birthday carolyn I love you!
Lindsey and the team hereMiles, miles, ellery and james!

Carolyn-
I am at a loss for where to begin... you are an amazing, accomplished woman who can do anything you set your mind to. I admire your ease with people, your joy of laughter, your sharing of pain, your ability to paint a room 10 times in one month, your fantastic chocolate chip cookies, your beautiful photographs, your beautiful, shiny hair and all its many hairdressers and haircuts, your ability to run a 1/2 marathon, your fame and excellence as a hot, sought after teacher, the fact that you are the hippest aunt, the master bargain shopper, the rescuer of me and my 3rd child... unbelievably cool as a cucumber under incredible stress!!! and the ultimate match maker finding me the man of my dreams!!!!
I think of you first and foremost as a friend, secondly a sister-in-law and how lucky that makes me!! I hope you have a wonderful 40th year of your life with many, many more years of good living to come!!!!
Happy Birthday!!!!!!!!!

My Little Sister is Turning 40
Wow. Very hard to believe that you are turing 40. I think back to the times that I spent horrifying you and it doesn't seem that long ago. Remember when mom brought home the oreos that you wanted? I opened the bag and licked all of them before you could get to them. From those days came the days when you were taller than me and forced me to stand on my toes in family pictures. You could have really tormented me then but you didn't...thanks. Then there were the high school years when we ended up at a few of the same parties and found that we actually cared about each other and really looked after each other. I think we both enjoyed the emotional support during those social pressure cookers. That continued through college as well, when we hung out together at Brown where you were loved like a sister by my friends who you always made laugh. We also worked through some tough times together, which rarely make the highlight reels but are the source of real relationships. I will take some credit for steering you away from a few of old boy friends so that you ended up with Mike. That's what big brothers are for. You also get full credit for spotting my future wife and in your own way, making sure she liked me (or at least thought I might be better than the inital impression might suggest) before I was able to do so. Where would I be without that help...only God knows.
I think our best years together, however, have been the last 15. You have grown into an incredible Mother, wife, daughter, sister-in-law, aunt, friend and big sister. You bring your positive attitude and energy into every interaction. What makes you so special, however, is that you bring it with a genuine sense of honesty and decency which inspires trust. No matter who it is.... students, colleagues, nieces, nephews , your kids, me, your siblings, your inlaws, your outlaws, your parents, etc.....everyone knows who you are and that you are a genuine person who cares about them. When people trust you, you can lead them and make an impact on their lives. You have done this with many, many people and you should be very proud of yourself for the impact that you have had. Thanks for all you do for me, my kids and my family. Don't go changing, you got a lot of living and impacting yet to do. happy 40th, Love Bernie

Forty years! It really isn't that long ago and yet it is. Imagine that Carolyn was born in a time when, because the nurse on duty knew my hairdresser, between contractions I was wheeled out of the delivery room into the corridor to have a cigarette!!!!!! Imagine that I was home recuperating when JFK was assinated. Imagine that Carolyn was two months old when we bought 167 Boston Neck Road!!!!!!
As the third child in a family of five siblings I think Carolyn has alot of the qualities of the middle child. Since I am the middle child in my family I know them when I see them!!!!!
My favorite qualities of my middle child? Easy. Honest, kind and thoughtful and even a mother can say FUN,FUN,FUN!!!!!
There have been times when Carolyn's honesty with her mother has not been easy to take but forever greatly appreciated.
There can't be anyone that knows Carolyn that has not benefited from her kindness and thoughtfulness. There are times when these qualities have caused anskt in her life but that is not such a bad thing to say about someone.
Fun, fun, fun.Different for a mother to say than a sibling or friend. I have read some of these blogs and I know there are references to times that I know nothing about. But, I do know that Carolyn can light up a room!!!! Can you imagine her on the campaign trail in Iowa? She has a gifted way with people that is a cherished attribute!!!!
Favorite song for Carolyn?"You are my Sunshine"
We love you so much honey. Love
My Little Sister
ENTHUSIASM, LOYALTY AND HER DESIRE TO ROCK THE WORLD are the three things I love most about Carolyn. Carolyn and I have had some FABULOUS journeys in life. A few come to mind. One summer we drove cross country to experience America. Carolyn was IN HER GLORY at Dolly Parton's Dollywood. You can just imagine how she wanted to show her cleave and move with the ladies. Later in the Grand Canyon we schlepped all the way to the bottom and never forgot our lipgloss. Last one I'll mention here is our "cruise" in Yugoslavia. The "ship" featured cabins about the half size of her closet and lots of hairy Yugoslavian men crazy for us. And through all of this we laughed and laughed because Carolyn found the fun!
What is the one thing Carolyn should do during her 40th year? Attend a taping of Oprah in Chicago...
I can always count on Carolyn to be there for BOTH the great times and the horrible ones. She is PERFECT in both settings.
Care, this is going to be an INCREDIBLE decade for you. You have it all...great family, lots of love and amazing siblings. We love you!

BIRTHDAY GIRL EXTRAORDINAIRE!
The first time I met Carolyn was at my brother Mike's apartment in Providence. In extending a welcome dinner invite to his siblings and their spouses, Mike hadn't exactly specified that there would be anyone else joining us that evening. Sooo....as we climbed out of the car in his driveway and glanced upward to his living room window to see (...no...yes?...no!...YES!) a young lady, we were of one voice: "A girl! He's got a GIRL up there!" (In retrospect not such an earth-shattering thought.)
Well, this is what I now know for sure about that "girl up there":
The way she lights up a room,
The way she brings fun and warmth to any activity,
The wonderful example she sets for her children,
Her sense of commitment and community spirit,
Her kindness, her beauty and (with my gratitude)
The way she loves my brother.
I'm a lucky sis-in-law! Happy Bday on your 40th Carolyn - Rock On!
Love, Anne

Here's the story of our friend Carolyn
Who is busy bringing kids from game to game
She's a happy, one hot mama
And EVERYONE knows her name.
Here's the story of the fashionable Carolyn
Who can find a bargain better than the rest
With her Michael Kors Jeans and Jimmy Choo shoes
She always looks the best.
And then one day she realized it's her big birthday
And she said, I don't know how that this could be
But her supportive, husband Michael lied and said, 40, that's not you -- it's me!
we love you, happy birthday :)

Never a Dull Moment With Carolyn - Billy Greene
So I am driving down the street 2 weeks ago with retail clients from charlottesville, va and a volvo wagon pulls in front of me
The driver starts waving wildly at me and the client asks if I know who that is and I say I have no idea
Then she starts turning around and blowing kisses to us and my client comments on how truly friendly the people of providence are
Then the driver turns into moses brown and I laugh out loud and the client asks who that was and I say that was carolyn chase, she's the best!!
And then it got dull again...........

Happy Birthday Caloryn!!!
Happy Birthday, Caloryn. I know that 40 is going to be the best year yet for you - the start of a new and fresh chapter.
What are the top 3 qualities I love about Carolyn? LOYAL, THOUGHTFUL, HILARIOUS, AUTHENTIC, TRUE TO HERSELF.
All my life Carolyn has been with me at every single meaningful moment. For most of my life, I have been tagging along and trying to keep up with her and her gang of friends (who really must have wondered about why I was always present). You can imagine, that this has been quite a journey for me, and I cannot believe - in hinsdight - that she did not ditch me or tell me to scram more often. In fact, Carolyn never once told me to get lost, and still manages to take my multiple phone calls per day, emails, and text messages with good cheer. There is no one like Carolyn to pick you up with a nice messages, drop everything to run to your side, or send you a cheesy Oprah quote that actually does make you feel better or appreciate your life a little more.
Since Mike asked, the song that reminds me most of Carolyn is "IT'S RAINING MEN" This is an all time classic tune, especially when sung in Spanish, while driving a golf cart. You have never seen anyone sing this song with more passion or humor or hip swaying - at the top of her lungs in the room we shared in the DR. Or you could always go with "Stranded at the Drive in" - but if you choose that song you must know that Carolyn will ALWAYS get to be Sandy, and you will always have to be Danny.
Happy Birthday, Caloryn. I love you!!! You are such an incredible mother, wife, sister, daughter, grandaughter, daughter-in-law, sister-in-law, aunt, teacher, coach, cook, painter, mulcher, tennis playing/but squatting, non-golfing, ball of energy. I am so lucky you are in my life and hope that in your 41st year you will be able to stop and read this blog whenever you need reminding about all the joy you spread.
Love, Jody(the great)

Cheater, cheater, husband stealer!!!
I would love nothing more than to tell on the occasion of her 40th just how much Carolyn means to me. From traveling back from LA with me when I was broken-hearted (okay dumped) and not disclosing that she didn't drive stick until after accepting the invitation, to adding just a little zest to our wedding party in Eleuthera, I could tell you that she's a been a rock.
Speaking of wedding, nice big hair!
And I learned from her never to miss an opportunity to smile for the camera!
And don't you usually need a limbo bar to assume that position on the dance floor! (My father looks frighteningly entertained! My mother? Not so much...)
Fast forward to making me work really hard to get her to join our fabulous Development team by rejoining the MB work-force (I worked so hard I had to leave!) and to stealing my daughter's heart by establishing herself as a parent-God by helping Ellie perfect her "bend-and-snap" and revel in a perfect-bangs day.
Who could ask for more from a person?
Forgetaboutit, though. She's my husband's other woman - always has been - and they're not even hiding it. Look carefully - they started on our wedding day!

So there's no way I'm going to celebrate you, my friend. No matter how much your friendship enriches my life with laughter, advice, support and idle gossip.
No way.
Lucy

Happy birthday, Mrs. Pretty!
We have learned a lot from Carolyn this year - how to get the job done with a minimum of fanfare...and a lot of fun. But the most important of all were her awesome beauty secrets
(turns out fake spanx and Swedish fish have a lot to do with her inner glow - who knew?)
We'll miss you down here when you go back upstairs, but we promise to invite you to all our parties (and recruit you for Reunion '09.) Now, when you finally decide to take those surfing lessons, we'll all come with! The more the merrier, right? :) xo Boss Lady
Happy Birthday Carolyn!!!!
OK..Funniest memory is pretty easy because there are so many to choose from having Carolyn as a big sister. Many of the funny memories are related to vanity things that we did. When I was 10 and Carolyn as probably a sophomore or junior in high school she had me pour HOT blueberries all over her scalp because she read that it would bring out natural highlights. I think it might have been before the prom. That was a pretty painful, ridiculous, but SOOO Carolyn idea. I can see Phoebe totally doing that.
I also think there were a lot of funny memories from when we traveled in Spain one summer (after my freshman year in college, I think). One that stands out is that Carolyn basically made us walk the entire trip with our butt cheeks squeezed tight so that when we went home we would have really tight buns!! And whenever we passed a cute boy we would both say "HOLA"....(a term we still use today for that occasion).
3 qualities that I love most about Carolyn: 1) She looks so much like me!! (I really think she is a total babe!!) 2) Her ability to make everyone love her (most popular in the family!) 3) Pure wackiness!
